October 2-4, 2009 Indigo Conference
During the first weekend in October, a group of sixteen dental hygiene students from Chippewa Valley Technical College had the privilege of attending the Indigo Conference at the Kalahari Resort in the Wisconsin Dells! Some of us started our journey by attending a wonderful presentation given by Dr. Richard Nagelberg on “Periodontal Medicine: Medical Manifestations of Periodontal Disease”. We then talked with vendors and other dental hygienists from all different regions throughout the state! Later, some of us participated in the table clinic competition in which we had the opportunity present for 3 different judges. One groups presentation, “CSI: Chairside,” placed 1st and another presented “The Link: Obesity and Periodontal Disease,” and placed 2nd! We also had the privilege of listening to a presentation given by Jodi Olmsted. She had wonderful information to share about the different career options available to us upon graduation; it seems the world of dental hygiene has endless possibilities! Her list of experience is very impressive; she is great role model to all in the dental hygiene field! Even though we were quite busy with the events of the weekend, we were still able to squeeze in a dinner with friends, a quick trip to the mall, and a few rides down the water slides! On Sunday, we spent our last few hours attending the House of Delegates meeting where we quickly learned that dental hygiene in Wisconsin is more complex than we might have thought! We also witnessed the installation of the new WDHA president, Debbie Schumacher! We wish her luck in the next year! The weekend was like none I have ever experienced. In the presence of friends, old and new, we were able to learn, as well as, enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the Kalahari Resort!

October 4, 2009 House of Delegates Meeting, Indigo Conference
Melissa Bridges--Student WTC
I am very glad that I was able to stay in the Dells and go to the House of Delegates meeting on Sunday. Although it did go a little longer than I thought it would, the 6 hours were definitely a learning experience. I acted as a page during the meeting, handing out papers, getting people water, tea, microphones, etc.
The first half of the day seemed to be ceremonious. There were introductions of everyone in the room, myself included. Then there were awards given for various reasons.
The Lobbyist for the WDHA spoke about the upcoming need to have a strong presence in Madison. (I had no idea that there was even a need for the Dental Hygienists Association to have a lobbyist!) The speaker that I had seen the day before, Jodi Olmsted, won an award for her service in the field over the years. It was interesting to get a different view of her from what I had seen the day before. It was also interesting that I had met several important people in the dental hygiene world without even realizing it.
The second part of the day was devoted to voting on issues and wording of amendments to the WDHA's procedures and duties, the budget was discussed, and new officers were installed. Yet again, I was surprised to see how much there was to it. The voting and procedures were all very official and forms were to be submitted for each change made to even something as small as changing the number of WTC students on the daily from 3 to 1, me.
As a professional, it helped me to realize the importance of joining the WDHA, as they are fighting for the rights of all hygienists in the state of Wisconsin. It seems difficult to just allow them to fight for me without even providing the smallest amount of monetary support. I feel lucky that I was able to attend as a student in order to understand something that I may have never understood otherwise.
June 2009
The American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s 86th Annual Session brought twelve students from Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, WI to Washington, DC. Along with attending educational meetings and presentations we were fortunate enough to sight see in our nation’s capital. We all took part in student table clinics, a tabletop presentation addressing a topic related to dental hygiene. We were judged on the quality of the board, the quality of the presentation, and the topic. Throughout the week we were lucky to meet so many other dental hygiene students from all of the United States. The trip was a great success!
